Princess Elisabeth Marie of Bavaria was born on July 8, 1913, in Munich, Germany. She was the only child of Prince Adalbert of Bavaria and his wife, Augusta, a member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.
As a member of the Bavarian Royal Family, she was entitled to the style of Her Royal Highness. She was also a descendant of the famous Bavarian King Ludwig II, who built the famous Neuschwanstein Castle.
When Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany, Princess Elisabeth's father, Prince Adalbert, was a vocal opponent of the Nazi regime. He was eventually arrested and spent five months in a concentration camp. In 1936, the family was forced into exile, and they settled in Hungary.
During WWII, Princess Elisabeth served as a nurse and volunteered at a hospital in Hungary. After the war, she worked for a time as an interpreter for the Red Cross.
In 1954, she married Count Friedrich von Oppersdorf, with whom she had two children. The couple lived in Austria until Princess Elisabeth's death on January 4, 1963, at the age of 49. She was buried in the family estate in Austria.
